Following a year and a half of closure due to the pandemic, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel will once again allow visitors inside its historic space beginning Tuesday, Sept. 28 and continuing through Autumn Quarter.
“The Rockefeller Chapel calendar has been filled with recording, rehearsing, ringing, and remembering this past year, but we can’t wait to share in-person experiences and performances again safely with old friends and new students alike, for which this wonderful place was scaled and built,” said Matthew Dean, Director of University Chapels.
Visiting hours for the public will be held Tuesday—Friday, 11 a.m.—5 p.m. CT and Sundays 10 a.m. —1 p.m. Like the rest of campus, masks are required.
The popular carillon tower tours are also back but limited to the campus community—you must have a UChicago ID to attend. The free tours are capped at 15 people and will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Tuesday—Friday. No reservation is required.
Weekly organ recitals also return on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. CT. Formerly Tea & Pipes, Tuesday Pipes (sans tea) will start Oct. 5.
Finally, Rockefeller’s traditional Christian Sunday services will return Oct. 3. Services start at 11 a.m. and include the chapel choir, vocal artists-in-residence, organ, and carillon. For the first service on Oct. 3, the choir will perform selections of J.S. Bach’s cantata Wir danken dir with orchestral accompaniment. Patrons are also invited to enjoy refreshments outside following the service, weather and public health guidelines permitting.
